  1. ELEMENTARY LEVEL ENCYCLOPEDIAS By LeAnne S. Christensen

  2. Encyclopedias: • are an alphabetical and comprehensive compilation • of succinct articles on an extremely wide range of • subjects. • may be general with basic information on most any • topic. • may be specialized and highly focused with more • detailed information on one particular subject. • may be a single volume, or a collection of volumes. • are a quick, ready, and convenient reference. • usually have topics arranged in alphabetical order. • come in different formats: printed text, CD’s, • DVD’s, online with multimedia options (free or • with a subscription).

  3. How Do They Help Us? • They help us find quick answers to direct questions on • a wide variety of subjects. • They are written so as to be easy to read and understand. • They can usually provide a brief summary covering the full • range of most any topic. • They provide one place to go to get a multitude of answers- • kind of like a survey course on most everything. • While general encyclopedias are “wide “ in their subject range • yet “shallow “ in the depth of information they do provide • cross- references and bibliographies for those that wish to • dig deeper.

  4. How to Evaluate Encyclopedias (Look at the LURES of the encyclopedia.) Level of user - should be age appropriate Updating policies – should do what it takes to stay/keep current Research aids – should provide indexes, cross-references, glossaries, related articles, and bibliographies of additional resources Electronic availability – Is it available online or on DVD? These formats contain more articles, have embedded search engines, have hyperlinks and multimedia, and are often interactive Special features –print versions might have an annual “updating” yearbook or special graphics features
