  1. Understanding Video and Audio Codecs Content for PowerPoint screen recording exercise prepared by Regina Smart Source: Camtasia Studio Learning Center at www.techsmith.com “Understanding Video and Audio Codecs”

  2. Discussion: • What is an AVI? • What is a codec? • Lossless vs. lossy • Identifying installed codecs • Determining video codec

  3. What is an AVI? • Audio Video Interleave (Microsoft) • Number of still images called frames combined sequentially in one file • Player displays consecutive images • Possibly thousands of frames • Large file size • AVI files compressed using video codecs to reduce file size

  4. What is a codec? • Compressor/decompressor • Algorithm – specialized computer program • Compression algorithm when record and produce video • Decompression when view video • Affects video • Quality • File size • Must use same codec for compress/decompress

  5. Video Codec Categories • Lossless • Maintain perfect image quality when compressed • TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC) • Lossy • Sacrifice image quality for compression • Image quality degrades each time reproduced • Microsoft Video 1

  6. Codecs • Many different codecs • Each has strengths and weaknesses

  7. TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC) • Camtasia default codec • Optimized for compressing videos of desktop applications that contain • Large blocks of the same color without gradient fills • No photographic images • Low motion such as office-style applications for training and demonstration • Produces small file size compared to other codecs • Recommend record with TSCC for video and PCM for audio, then can change to another codec or format as required by users • Must distribute codec, but it is free

  8. Identify Installed Codecs

  9. Determine Video Codec • In Windows Explorer right-click video file name • Properties • Summary tab • Advanced • Codec listed in Video Compression • In Camtasia • Right-click a thumbnail and select Properties
