  2. General information • Moscow occupies 1081 square kilometers • Green areas cover ~ 30% of the total area of the city • Moscow green areas include 1270 sites such as: • 120 parks • 272 boulevards • 392 squares • 236 nature reserves (protected areas)

Laws and Regulations • Fundamentals of Moscow greenery creating, maintenance and protection • On the General scheme of Moscow’s greenery planting till 2020 • On launching Moscow Government Award for the best landscaping and public amenities project to be implemented at the green areas of Moscow • On the programme of compensatory (replacement) planting of greenery in Moscow for 2011

  4. The target programme of the Moscow Government “Environmental Protection for 2012-2016” Priorities: • Increase of the share of Moscow green resources • Maintenance of urban green areas balance • Implementation of the programme of compensatory (replacement) greenery planting in Moscow

Moscow is the most northern metropolitan city in the world • Short vegetation period • Cycles of freezing and thawing of the soil • Deicing (ice melting) chemicals • Late spring frosts • Snowfalls and sleets selection of species which are most suitable (tolerant enough) for gardening and floral and shrub decoration

Priorities of green zones development • ▪ Rehabilitation and restoration of green areas, water bodies, soil and biodiversity, reserves development • ▪Expansion of the city green resources up to 40% of the total city area ▪ Enhancement of the qualitative composition and structure of the greenery ▪ Prevention of the weakening and disease of the greenery
