  2. First things first, do you personally believe you can achieve peace with war?

  3. Isolationism • Prior to World War 2, U.S. Practicing a policy of ISOLATIONISM • Belief that a country should focus on its own affairs and avoid war at any cost • In other words........the U.S. Wanted a time out from everyone else’s problems.....until well.....Pearl Harbour.....

  4. The Dropping of the Atomic Bomb on Japan • July 1945: Pres. Truman (US) warned Japanese to surrender or risk being totally destroyed • Manhattan Project: Secret research of American & Canadian scientists, dev. 1st nuclear weapon of its kind • Top secret research site in New Mexico desert

  5. Why Hiroshima, Japan? • First bombing location chosen because major sea port and army headquarters • Bomber called “Enola Gay”, carried 1st single atomic bomb • When dropped, 60% of city destroyed instantly, city covered in mushroom cloud • 71,000 people dead or missing; 68,000 hurt • All buildings within 1 km destroyed

  6. No Surrender? • Three days later, after no surrender, another was dropped on city of Nagasaki • Another 35,000 Japanese killed and 60,000 injured • Within days, others began noticing burns, rotting skin, teeth falling out, fevers, and burns • Illness due to massive amount of radiation exposure

  7. Surrender at Last • On September 2nd, 1945, Japanese surrendered, ending war in the Pacific

Significance • First nuclear weapon of its kind in the world, began a new era in warfare • Canadians part of the team to design this weapon • Led to the “Cold War” major conflict between Russia, Canada, and U.S. Which nearly led to another world war (Russia sent spies to gain secret info on making nuclear weapons, etc.)

  17. Significance • Devastated an entire country, millions of innocent lives lost, in an effort for “peace” • Can violence actually lead to a genuine peace? • Do you think this was too severe? • Was this necessary?

  18. Significance • Killed in total an estimated 210,000 people • 20% due to exposure to radiation • Very high rates of cancer such as leukemia, etc....also present in survivors, increased risk of childhood deformities • Many children born after bombs had severe deformities, high rates of cancer

  19. So I ask you again, can you achieve peace with war?
