Coordinating Conjunctions • Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, is a center of transportation and industry in the Southeast. • The word and connects the nouns transportation and industry. • Which group of words does but connect in the next sentence? • Atlanta was once the site of a Native American village, but later it became an important railroad town. • The word but connects the independent clause that comes before it to the one that comes after it. • Coordinating conjunctions connect words or word groups of equal importance.

Correlative Conjunctions • Sometimes two conjunctions work together. • Its location at the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad make Atlanta an ideal home for both railroad workers and their families. • The conjunctions both …. and connect the nouns workers and families. • Conjunctions that work in pairs are called correlative conjunctions. • Other examples are either/or, neither/nor, not/only, and but/also

  4. Subordinating Conjunctions • Subordinating conjunctions connect dependent clauses to the rest of a sentence. • What is the subordinating conjunction is the following sentence? Before Atlanta got its present name in 1845, it was called Terminus. • The answer is before • The most common subordinating conjunctions are after, although, as, as if, as though, because, before, if, since, so that, than, though, unless, until, when, whenever, where, wherever, whether, while.

Let’s practice • Since many major state and interstate highways lead to Atlanta, traffic congestion is a problem. • MARTA, a high speed rail system, is being built so that people can travel into the city quickly. • When MARTA is completed, it will connect downtown Atlanta to he suburbs. • A tunnel will join the MARTA terminal with Underground Atlanta, where visitors can see the restored older sections of the city. • Although Atlanta is a growing city with a bright future, Atlantans still preserve the charm of the city’s past.
