  1. Multimedia project Luciana Kelaiditis Frost TIE 544/553

  2. Purpose • My multimedia project and, by extension, hypermedia project will deal with the teaching of the traditional five paragraph essay. This project is suited for teaching in the freshman/sophomore high school English curriculum, but I have also taught the fundamentals of the five paragraph essay to students as young as eighth grade and as old as senior year in high school. • The five paragraph essay goes beyond a way of writing, as it is more a way of constructing or organizing a thought, an argument, or a documentary, as well as a piece of writing. It is important that writing students understand the larger concept of the five paragraph essay as well as the other important pieces of the writing process. • Within this portfolio I have consciously added pictures of outlines of the specific body paragraphs within a five paragraph essay. This is necessary because it reinforces the basic idea of thesis/topic sentence and examples, which is the core of the five paragraph essay. Thus, first I have included a simplified outline, and then I have added an exploded outline. Each of the elements of the exploded outline, i.e. the introductory paragraph, the first, second and third body paragraphs, and the conclusion paragraph, all represent the pieces of the five paragraph essay. • I have also chosen to include elements of the basic writing process in this multimedia portfolio. I have found that when teaching the five paragraph essay, it is always beneficial to review the writing process. This becomes the prior knowledge that is referenced when teaching the five paragraph essay, especially when utilizing Gagne’s Nine Steps of Instructional Design • I have also included a picture of my students, utilizing notes and peers in order to write at the keyboard. Both the Illinois State Standards as well as the NETS-S address composition at the keyboard, and in order to meet these standards students must be able to optimize the preplanning process.

Illinois Learning Standards This project addresses English/Language Arts standards for Writing. • Early High School: 3.B.4a Produce documents that exhibit a range of writing techniques appropriate to purpose and audience, with clarity of focus, logic of organization, appropriate elaboration and support and overall coherence. • Late High School: 3.B.5 Using contemporary technology, produce documents of publication quality for specific purposes and audiences; exhibit clarity of focus, logic of organization, appropriate elaboration and support and overall coherence. • Late High School: 3.C.5a Communicate information and ideas in narrative, informative and persuasive writing with clarity and effectiveness in a variety of written forms using appropriate traditional and/or electronic formats; adapt content, vocabulary, voice and tone to the audience, purpose and situation.

  4. National Educational Technology Standards for Students 2. Communication and Collaboration • Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: • a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. • b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats. • c. develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures. • d. contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.

ISTE: Literacy Standards for Grades 9-12 • Specifically, this focuses on the technology standards relating to grades 9-12, in particular, Standard 10 . • Collaborate with peers, experts, and others to contribute to a content-related knowledge base by using technology to compile, synthesize, produce, and disseminate information, models, and other creative works. (4, 5, 6 – Performance indicators within the context of the NETS-S standards).
