  4. Determining Where You Will Obtain Your Career Assemble a list of admission requirements and qualifications for schools that you’re interested in.   5. Choosing a Major What is a major? An academic major is the academic discipline to which an undergraduate student formally commits. A student who successfully completes all courses required for the major qualifies for an undergraduate degree.

CHOOSING A COLLEGE Things to consider: • type of programs offered • commuting vs. living on campus • urban vs. small college town • size of the school • extracurricular/ athletic activities • size of classes/ faculty-student ratio • restrictions/ regulations of social life • cost of the school

Community College vs 4 Year Universities Universities • Wider selection of majors/specialties • May obtain a Bachelors degree with the possibility of continuing education for a Masters degree Community College • Certificates • 2 Year Associate Degrees (AA/AS) • Transfer to a 4 year University

Admission Requirements 2-year • Guaranteed Admission • Accept H.S. grads, G.E.D. recipients or adults 18 years and older • Applications process begins in January 4-year • ACT or SAT scores are required • G.P.A., class rank, volunteer work, personal statement, professional essay, extra curricular activities, letters of recommendation, and/or transcripts may be taken into consideration • Application process generally available August 1st through November 30

Tuition Community College • As a full-time student, the estimated tuition amount is $46 a semester unit; $1360 per year Universities • As a full time student at a CSU, the estimated tuition amount is $5,472 (CSUF) (books, housing and transportation are not included) • As a full time student at a UC, the estimated tuition amount is $12,804 (books, housing and transportation are not included)

Housing Community College • Considered commuter schools • Most students live at home while attending school Universities • On campus housing is usually available via dormitories, may be required for incoming students ex. Cal Poly Pomona • Off campus housing includes—houses for rent, apartments, condos, sorority and fraternity living

  17. Community College Process • Explore a major or program of study • Attend the Community College Assembly 2nd semester • Attend application workshops and submit an application online • Complete Assessments (if applicable) • Complete your Orientation and Counseling meeting • Tour the campus

University Process • Explore a major or program of study • Take the SAT and/or ACT (Seniors can test through November of 2018) • Fee waivers available for those who qualify • If applicable complete the Essay Prompts/Statements • Attend the application workshops and submit your CSU and UC applications online by Nov. 30 • Attend the Community College Assembly • Select a college to apply to as a back up plan • Complete your Student Intent to Register (SIR) online by May 1st

  20. Naviance What is Naviance? A program that students will use throughout the year to explore personal career interests and institutions that provide education to match their career goal

Naviance • Get involved in the planning and advising process – Build a resume, complete online surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines • Research & compare colleges – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted in the past. • Research careers – Research hundreds of careers and career clusters, and take career assessments • Create plans for the future – Create goals and to-dos, and complete tasks assigned to you by the school • Access to scholarships-Provides a list of local scholarship opportunities

Cal SOAP Summer Camp Week of July 9 Student who attend the camp: • preview the UC, CSU and Common application • search for colleges and learn about college majors • get a head start on the college application essays • learn about and prepare for the FAFSA/Dream Act • learn about college life both on and off campus • visit a college campus

Dates to be announced. Parents are welcomed to attend all upcoming workshops and events

Senior Action Plan • Create a professional email other than wuhsd.org • Create a system to maintain all paperwork, passwords, deadlines, folder in your email for each school applied to etc. • Communicate cost of apps & financing this entire process with your parents/guardians • Begin requesting letters of recommendations x2 Complete a brag sheet (via Naviance) • Register for SAT/ACT Keep your scores available • Begin filling out college apps • Search & apply to scholarships
