  2. Deciduous dentition • Primary dentition • Smaller than the Permanent teeth • The crowns are characteristically bulbous, bulging buccally and lingually at the cervical rim

  3. Functions of the primary dentition • Predecessors of the Permanent Teeth • Needed for efficient mastication of food • Provides support for the cheeks and lips maintaining a normal facial appearance and smile • Articulation of speech

  4. Deciduous Maxillary Central Incisors Class traits and type traits • Labial View • Crown • Short • Broad • Mesiodistal dimension often longer than the crown height • Straight incisal edge with a sharp mesioincisal angle and a well rounded distoincisal angle

Deciduous Maxillary Central Incisors • Mesial side is straight while the distal is rounded • The cervical line is less apically curved than seen in the permanent tooth • The labial surface is smooth and bulges notably at the cervical third • Root • Primary incisor roots are about twice the length of the crown

  6. Deciduous Maxillary Central Incisors • Lingual View • Highly developed cingulum • Marginal ridges are distinct and prominent

  7. Deciduous Maxillary Central Incisors • Proximal Views • The crown is wide labiolingually on the cervical third because of the prominence of the cingulum • Cervical line is more curved towards the incisal on the mesial side than the distal side Mesial Distal

  8. Deciduous Maxillary Central Incisors • Incisal View • Smooth convex labial outline • Diamond-shaped outline • The incisal ridge is slightly curved mesiodistally • Lingual surfaces become narrower toward the lingual • Mesiodistal width greater than labiolingual width
