  1. Modest Dress By Robert C. Archer

  2. A key passage is • 1 Timothy 2:9-10 (NKJV) • 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

  3. Four Key Words • 1 Timothy 2:9-10 (NKJV) • 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with proprietyand moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

  4. Definitions • Modest (Gk. kosmios) • “Well-arranged, seemly, modest” (Thayer) • “Orderly, well arranged, decent, modest …harmonious arrangement, adornment; (Vine).

  5. Definitions • Propriety (Gk. aidos) • “A sense of shame...Shamefacedness is that modesty which is ‘fast’ or rooted in the character...” (Vine). • “A sense of shame” and a “sense of honor” (Little Kittel p. 26). • “Christians should feel a sense of honor that leads us to present ourselves decently, and a sense of shame when this is not the case” (Kyle Pope)

  6. Definitions • Moderation (Gk. sophrosune) • “Denotes soundness of mind... it is that habitual inner self-government, with its constant rein on all the passions and desires, which would hinder the temptation to these from arising…(Vine).

  7. Definitions • Godliness (Gk. eusebeia) • “To be devout, denotes that piety which, characterized by a Godward attitude, does that which is well-pleasing to him” (Vine).

  8. Several things we need to consider • That while there is nothing wrong with the human body, there are parts to be shown and not shown. • 1 Corinthians 12:23-24 (NKJV) 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, • 24 but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it

  9. Several things we need to consider • Certain parts of the body belong to the person themselves and if married to their mates • 1 Corinthians 7:3-4 (NKJV) 3 Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. • Leviticus 18:8 (NKJV) 8 ‘The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your father’s nakedness.

  10. Several things we need to consider • That we have a responsibility to others – not to lead them into sin • Jesus said • Matthew 5:28 (NKJV) 28 “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” • Matthew 18:6 (NKJV) 6 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.”

  11. We must practice self-control • David (Psa. 51) • Job • Job 31:1 (NKJV) 1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?”

  12. Several things we need to consider • That what we wear reflects what is in our hearts • Matthew 15:19 (NKJV) 19 “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. • 1 Peter 3:3-4 3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward--arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel-- 4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

  13. Several things we need to consider • That we must have the courage to be different from the world • Ephesians 5:11 (NKJV) 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

  14. Conclusion • We don’t have to be “odd balls” but we can dress in a way that shows respect for God, ourselves and others.
