  1. A Computational Model for Interhemispheric Interactions and its Correlates of Consciousness Hadjar Homaei November 27, 2006

  2. Consciousness • Consciousness is the ability to perceive the relationship between oneself and one's environment. • It is a subject of much research in philosophy of mind, psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive science.

  3. Consciousness • Phenomenal consciousness is experience itself"I am conscious." • Access consciousness is the processing of the things in experience"I am conscious of these words."

  4. Consciousness Tests • Turing Test • Mirror Test • Delay Test

  5. Cognitive neuroscience approaches • Psychological statistical studies • Case studies of consciousness states and the deficits that disrupt the normal functioning of human senses and cognition.

  6. Neural Correlates of Consciousness • Neural correlate of a content of experience • NCC • Neuroscience hypothesizes that consciousness is generated by the interoperation of various parts of the brain, called the NCCs.

  7. Artificial Consciousness • Artificial consciousness (AC) • Machine consciousness (MC) • Synthetic consciousness

  8. Corpus Callosum and Split-Brain • Corpus Callosum is the neural link between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. • Split-brain • It is rarely performed, usually in the case of epilepsy

  9. Split-Brain Experiments

  10. Split Brain and Consciousness • Some say that it is as if two separate minds now share the same skull, but both still represent themselves as a single "I" to the outside world.[

  11. My Envisioned Thesis Problem • The purpose of this envisioned thesis is to develop a computational model for the corpus callosum, using the currently available neuro-anatomical data and simplify it to a minimal level that by eliminating each part it can exhibit the phenomenal consciousness deficits that is seen in split brain patients. • In the ideal condition we can do the surgery on mice or monkeys and investigate the effects on Access consciousness in depth.
