Future Directions in EDA Standards: Insights from the 2008 EDP Symposium Panel

  3. Background • I joined the IEEE Council on EDA in 2006 • Organized a study group to look into EDA standards • Made observations • Explored some ideas • Now considering next steps • Hope EDPS session will provide additional input • Looking for your input today and in the future

Council on EDA - Objectives • Consolidate EDA activities in IEEE • Continue improving conferences and publications • Initiate new complementary activities • Cooperate with other professional organizations • Enhance the infrastructure for the EDA professional • Expand globally to reach more of the EDA community

Initial Approach • Form group to study EDA standards development • Talk to IEEE groups • DASC and TTSC from Computer Society • IEEE Standards Association • Meet with outside groups • Accellera, OSCI, Si2, SPIRIT, VSIA • Host regular joint discussions • Identify concerns and issues • Explore ways to improve EDA standards development

Study Group Observations • Need open inclusive process for best ideas • Need ability to move fast in early stages • Standards require ecosystem to have impact • IP has emerged as important issue • Standards development requires funding • Not always aware of best IEEE procedures • IEEE allows conflicting competing standards

Possible Council Next Steps • Bring together leaders of the EDA standards community • Share views on the needs for EDA standards • Review progress and bottlenecks • Share best practices and procedures • Define actions to make improvements • Link EDA standards with Council activities • Leverage Council conferences, publications, community • Identify the need for new standards in emerging areas • Promote adoption of existing standards • Provide education and supporting infrastructure
