The Damaged “…the waifs and strays of Europe….freaks of creation.” (The Mail and Empire, 1899) "…drunkards, paupers, loafers and jailbirds…” (Henri Bourassa, 1919)
The Depleted • The “Healthy Immigrant” effect: • Problems with Methods: • Time vs. Cohort • Measurement • Regression to the mean? • Applicable to everything and to everybody?
The Depleted • Contingencies: • Depends on the Condition – TB, CVS, Mental Disorder? • Age variations • Ethnocultural variations • Another big Problem: • Passive model. Neglects situation and resilience.
Immigration Resettlement and Health • Lets’ examine research: Anything other than a critical examination is not respectful: • 1. Underlying models: heuristic or hortatory? • 2. Nature and quality of evidence? • 3. Are contingencies considered -- age, gender, ethnocultrual background, immigration cohort, immigration class, etc? • 4. What are the shortcomings? – and there are always shortcomings. • 5. What’s remediable, and what would it take to implement solutions?
