  1. Nordic Wax Tech Karen Alence Vermont Technical College Spring 2013

  2. Thanks to teachers, colleagues, friends, and family!

  3. Nordic Wax Tech A device that will take input from temperature and humidity sensors as well as additional user input, and display on an LCD screen the appropriate cross country ski wax to use.

  4. Cross Country Skis and Waxing * * * The Right Wax * * * The Wrong Wax ------best glide for the least effort ----- can turn good day into bad

  5. Many Factors in Choosing the Right Wax • Environmental • Temperature • Humidity • Snow Conditions • Type of Wax • Glide • Kick • Skier Intensity/Type of Workout • Recreational • Speedy Amateur Workout/Racing • Collegiate, National Level or Professional Racing • Brand of Wax • Toko • Swix • Others…

  6. Environmental • Temperature **** Most Important of All! • Humidity • Type of Snow • Freshly Fallen • Old • Man Made • Icy

  7. Skier Intensity I Recreational/Light Training: HC $5 II Serious Training/Citizen or Junior Racing: LF $20 III Seriously Competitive Racing: HF $100

  8. Wax Brand Two major brands Switzerland Norway And other brands showing up recently for US marketing

  9. Two Types of Skis andTwo Categories of Wax Classic Skis: Diagonal Stride - skis always face straight ahead. Push from kick wax under foot. Kick wax under foot and glide wax tips and tails. Skate Skis: Skis point out - Push from sideways, skating motion. Glide wax entire ski. Project focuses only on Glide Wax

  10. So many variable factors … so little time….. For Now (This Project Focus is on temperature variations) Toko Glide Amateur skier training/racer Fresh fallen snow Later (Future Development) : Program enhanced All variables considered

  11. Project Timeline

  12. System Diagram 5V 5V Nat’l Semiconductor LM335 Battery Power 3V LCD Display Sensor Input Temperature %Humidity=65 Temp F deg =34 Push Button for Wax Recommendation Hitachi HD44780U Sensor Input User Input Button Push Humidity HCS08 Micro Controller Honeywell 4010 Toko LF Yellow Wax Recommendation

  13. Input Sensors: 1) Temperature 2) Humidity User Input: ‘Push Button for Wax Recommendation’

  14. Program Output Temp = 24 deg F %Humidity = 74 Push Button for Wax Recommendation LCD Screen displays ambient temperature and humidity updated every tenth of a second. If button is pushed…….

  15. Program Output LCD Screen displays recommendations for glide wax. TOKO LF Red

  16. Keeping Track of Parts Needed 2 of everything!

  17. Where Did the Data Come Fromor Who’s the Wax Expert? Swix and Toko Online resources Started by getting data for all snow conditions , all temps, all humidity in both companies Pages of data Tailored project to reality Work not lost - programming for a later date

  18. Testing the Sensors • Moved it around to different temperatures and humidities • Independent digital humidity and temperature for comparison

  19. Temperature Sensor National Semiconductor LM34 Fahrenheit Temperature Sensor 10 mV/degree Easy Accurate to the degree

  20. Humidity Sensor • Honeywell 4010 Humidity Sensor • Graph from data sheet • Slope and y intercept formula • Convert voltage to humidity • Accurate to +- 1 %

  21. Programming Flowchart first Write program in ‘C’ ADC ports convert voltage to a digital value 0-1023 (10 bits) Main loop code converts digital value to temp or humidity Button push calls function wax_rec_out

  22. Function Call wax_rec_out function Code is written to display a certain wax For a prescribed temp range

  23. Testing the Circuit Schematic first Then build it on the protoboard

  24. Problems Arise! Finicky nature of an LCD - color counts

  25. Creating the Layout Start with hand drawn sketch Eagle software Make ‘library’ parts for each component Part go into schematic Can connect with pin names-no wires Tidy, uncluttered appearance

  26. Creating the Layout This Board Layout Will look like this as a circuit board Wiring all underneath

  27. The Completed Device The final product: Single layer circuit board Soldered components Attached power sources and LCD

  28. Conclusion Nordic Wax Tech’s Successful First Stage Complete Market Ready Product Will Need: Waterproof Device Package Enhanced Programming

  29. Conclusion Nordic Wax Tech’s successful first stage! Temperature and humidity Toko glide wax recommendation for training workout in fresh snow In Out Nordic Wax Tech Temp= 22 deg F %Humidity=74 Push Button for Wax Recommendation TOKO LF Red

  30. Conclusion Coming Soon! Glide or kick wax Temperature and humidity In In Out In Snow Type In In Wax recommendation based on all input criteria Skier Intensity Wax brand Ultimate Nordic Wax Tech Temp= 22 deg F %Humidity=74 Push Button for Wax Recommendation Swix Universal Klister over Ironed-In Green Binder
