  1. W&M Target Update Joe Katich 3He Collaboration Meeting, February 20, 2007

  2. Cells Filled So Far • W&M and UVa have each successfully filled one cell (one of each pull-off) – so it can be done! • Mike: Hard to make 3 ½” cell with these pull-offs, but he can do it. • Have not yet been tested, because there is no oven to test them in! • W&M constructed new ceramic oven to accommodate new cells (thanks Sabine Fuchs and Paul Black). Should be ready in ~1 month.

  3. 3 ½” 2 ½” Cell Size for Upcoming Experiments Some Brief History: GEn : made 3 ½” and 2 ½” pumping chamber cells (only used the 3 ½” cells in beam) – showed no difference in “lab” polarization. Oven Window

  4. 3 ½” 3” Cell Size for Upcoming Experiments • Plan is to make cells with 3” pumping chamber, but same length transfer tube – in practice, no reason to believe it won’t polarize just as well as GEn cells.

  5. Cell Size for Upcoming Experiments Pros and Cons: Pros: • Better polarization gradient – shorter transfer tube • Save some laser power • Easier for glassblower to make Cons: • Gen used 3 ½” cells and had best polarization ever • Jaideep and Aidan’s calculations predict polarization in 3 ½” cells would be marginally better

  6. Glass Blowing • Cell production will start right away • W&M purchase some old equipment of Willy’s to help set up his own shop – may be making cells for us again very soon
