Explained by Dr Amarjit Mishra Amarjit Mishra, the symptoms of acute upper respiratory infection can vary depending on the specific pathogen and the individual’s immune response. Common symptoms include coughing, sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, mild headache, low-grade fever, fatigue and body aches. But do you know that the most common sign of URI is cough ?

Cough as a Sign of URI As per DrAmarjit Mishra Ex-Assistant Professor, Auburn University and a known expert in the field of pulmonology research, coughing is a natural response of the respiratory system to clear irritants, mucus, or foreign substances from the airways. In the case of an upper respiratory infection, the lining of the respiratory tract can become inflamed and produce excess mucus.

  3. Cough can also be distinguished as coughing fits or coughing that is caused by sore throat and nasal congestion. Coughing fits or coughing bouts can occur frequently and intensely, often triggered by throat irritation or post nasal drip.
