  1. Sixth Grade Open House September 2, 2014

  2. Welcome! • I hope everyone enjoyed their summer! • I’m excited to be teaching sixth grade at F.E. Miley Elementary. • I’m looking forward to a great year!

  3. Expectations and Consequences • Expectations • Be Respectful • Be Responsible • Be Safe • Consequences • 1. Verbal Reminders • 2. Behavior Form & Parent Signature Card if student exceeds three verbal reminders in one day • 3. Lose Recess Privileges if a student exceeds twobehavior cards in one week • 4. Improvement Plan if a student exceeds eight behavior cards in two weeks • 5. Severe: Discipline Notice/Office Referral

  4. Rewarding Positive Behavior • Positive Individual Rewards • Positive Pioneer Tickets (Sixth Grade) Students earn these by following the class expectations and going above and beyond the expectations. Tickets go into a drawing which we draw from every Friday. If a student’s ticket is drawn, they pick from a variety of coupons. • Pioneer Pride Tickets (School-Wide) Students earn these by being kind, honest, helpful, gracious, and trustworthy as well as staying on task and persevering even when things get hard. • Good News Notes • Positive Whole Class Rewards • Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head • Community Building • Student Shout Outs • End of the Day Jar

  5. Attendance/Absences • Attendance is extremely important. When students are absent, they miss important instruction and learning activities. • Students who miss one day or less in a quarter receive a 1% increase on their quarter grades. Students who miss more than 10 days in a semester lose 2% points on their quarter grades. • Please let me know at least one week in advance if your child will be gone for a doctor’s appointment, trip, etc. Any assignments must be completed prior to the absence. If the work is not completed or turned in, your child will receive a zero.

  6. Homework • Homework is due the day after it is assigned. Students may come into my classroom at 7:50am if they need help with any homework. • If homework is not completed or turned in, students will receive a zero. I allow one late assignment each quarter.

  7. Assignment Folders • Each student has an assignment folder which contains an assignment sheet as well as graded papers and important information. • The assignment sheets need to be initialed every day and returned to school in the folder. Students also need to circle “yes/no” depending on whether their assignments are done or not. • The assignment folder is an extremely important part of being responsible in sixth grade.

  8. Grades • Students’ grades are determined by an average of all assignments, tests, projects, etc. in each subject. In art, students will earn participation and completion points to determine their grades. • Students are required to earn 10 Accelerated Reader points this quarter. The amount of points they earn will be the grade they receive (10 points 100%, 9 points 90%, 8 points 80%). Students must journal about their AR books in their KBAR notebooks; they must have two entries each week and their notebooks are due every Friday. KBAR entries are worth 20 points each. • We have weekly spelling tests, reading tests (comprehension, vocabulary, decoding), and grammar tests. I will give students plenty of notice for math, science, and social studies tests. Students are responsible for studying.

  9. Cell Phones and Devices • Cell phones need to be kept in students’ lockers. • Devices that can be used for reading are allowed as long as students do not abuse the privilege.

  10. Hygiene • Students are at the age where their hormones start to change. Developing good personal hygiene is important. Please help your child develop good hygiene habits by encouraging showers and deodorant every day. I highly encourage keeping deodorants in their lockers. We want to keep our classroom smelling good. 

  11. Website • bigsandy.k12.mt.us • Teacher Pages • Ms. Peterson • Please use my Teacher Page as a way to know what is happening in sixth grade. I will continue to add to my page; it is a valuable resource for both you and your student.
