  3. Kony’s Background • Quick-tempered child • Often used violence as a way to fix problems • Dropped out of school before graduating • Joined an apprentice with his brother in town • Brother was the witch doctor

  4. Beginning of Criminal Career • Early 1980s: Holy Spirit Movement • Alice Lakwena/Auma; “spirit-led” • Government overthrow attempt • Lakwena exiled • Kony took over • Claimed relation to Alice • 1986 • -Became the LRA • Lord’s Resistance Army

  5. Start of the LRA • Mission: • Overthrow the “cruel” government and rule based off of the 10 Commandments • Led by Kony • Lost support • With this, Kony’s kidnapping began and the army formed

Lord’s Resistance Army • Kony intended to create his own “pure” race • Children kidnapped to be soldiers, porters, sex slaves, pack mules, and cooks • Initiation is to kill their parents • Kony estimated to have kidnapped over 70,000 children • Supported by the Sudanese Government • Guerilla warfare training

Acts of the LRA • Rebels disguise as military members • Some children’s acts: • Pack mules until too weak, then killed • Front lines when go to war against government • Decoys/targets • Aid in kidnapping of other victims • Ugandan President YoweriMuseveni occasionally offers peace negotiations • Kony always backs out • Musevini says “Kony must die”

  8. Facts • Kony had his deputy, Vincent Otti, executed in 2007 for having peace talks. • Kony believes he is the Messiah of our culture • Uganda offers $11,000 reward for his capture • Kony currently hiding in some area of Congo and being hunted
