  1. The owner and manager are at NAMM and the POS computer just died! What do I do????!!!! The store alarm keeps going off and no one knows the passcode! Jimmy didn’t show up for work this afternoon and there is no one to close tonight. Why is the internet not working? The toilet overflowing! Why will the boss not answer the *&^%!$# phone? It’s snowing here and the heat is not coming on. The fire is where? The store was broken into and the police are asking for insurance information. What do I tell them?   4. Unlike some other businesses you can’t hang an “Out Of Order” sign to solve every problem, and if you are 1,000+ miles away you can not help locally anyway. Still, for your Retail First Responder Plan to work properly it’s important to instill in everyone that works in your business that All Situations Can Be Solved With A Prepared Staff & Plan Of Action.

  5. It’s happened to me several times. I’ve was out of town and the unexpected happened, but we had our Retail First Responder Plan in place so I had piece of mind that everything would be alright. Everyone knew what to do, who to call and how to handle the situation in my absence.

  6. Retail First Responder Plans are as simple as two basic components: An Action List & A Trained Staff

  7. Putting your Retail First Responder Plan in place. Identify the “What If” scenarios based on past experiences and events that have, or can happen. Ifyour business is located at the coast you may have flooding, or you may be expecting a blizzard and your heat might go out.

Other “What If’s”:The Roof LeaksThe Heat/AC Does Not WorkThere Is A Tornado/HurricaneYour Store Is Broken IntoAn Employee Does Not Show Up For WorkA Customer/Employee Is Hurt In Your ShopThe Store Alarm Malfunctions And Keeps Sending False AlarmsThere Is A Fire In The StoreThe POS Goes DownYou’re Robbed

  9. Once You Have Identified The “What If” Scenarios You Can Put Your Action List In Place

  10. Action ListsGo over your action list with your employees before a crisis happens, not during or after. Great Retail First Responder Plans have specific steps in your Action List that everyone should follow.

  11. Your Action List Should Be In A Centralized Spot Behind Your Main Counter And Not In A Drawer Or Office Where Someone Has To Hunt For It.

  12. Your Action List Should Contain Contact Information For: Alarm Monitoring CompanyHVAC RepairRoofing CompanyGeneral Contractor/Handy ManLandlordInsurance CompanyElectricianComputer Repair/IT PersonInternet Service ProviderUtilities: including gas, electric, oil, phone, etc...

  13. Your Action List Should NOT Contain:Account NumbersAny Personal Information Such As Social Security Numbers

  14. Act It OutAt a meeting introduce a scenario from your “What If” list and ask your employees what their first, second and third steps would be to solve the problem (hint, the first step should not be “call the owner or manager” unless someone dies)

  15. Being Prepared Takes A Little Organized Planning & A Well Trained Team. If You Take The Time To Set All Of These Things In Place You Will Have Piece Of Mind When You Are Not In The Store.
