National Action Forum Diabetes mellitus (NAFDM) • Founded October 7, 2004 • Aims: Improvement in awareness, prevention, early detection, care and research of diabetes through visualization and coordination of all actions and groups. • The Deutsche Diabetes Union coordinates the NAFDM. • The coordination of the NAFDM is currently supported by the Ministry of Health, Aventis Foundation and others. • Position statements for prevention and patient care have been published in April 2005. A research statement and two National Diabetes Studies are in preparation.

Research and Development • Position statement in preparation • National Diabetes Studies: • Therapy study: DOT.DE (Diabetes Optimal Treatment): Influence of antidiabetic treatment regimen on cardiovascular endpoints in high-risk type 2-diabetic subjects (Steering Committee: Profs. Nauck, Klein, Kerner, Joost) • Prevention study: Efficacy and efficiency of lifestyle interventions in the prevention of type 2 diabetes (Steering Committee: Profs. Pfeiffer, Stumvoll, Fritsche, Drs. Hermanns, Schwarz, Spranger)

National Action Forum Diabetes mellitus (NAFDM) The next steps: • DDG treatment guidelines: Publication and further development • Implementation of quality monitoring system based on suitable random samples on an annual basis (“Elektronischer Gesundheitspass Diabetes” – electronic diabetes bill of health) • Establishment of central project management for the National Diabetes Studies • 2nd plenary meeting of the National Action Forum Diabetes mellitus • “Collection” of the activities and projects within the 3 project groups (questionnaire campaign) • Attempt to establish thematic and content network within and between the 3 project groups
