  2. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) What is it? And does it cause cancer?

  3. What is HPV? • HPV is a disease that is passed on through sex, or an STD. • The several types of this disease are not easily identified. • About 70% of all sexually active people have HPV.

  4. Human papillomavirus HPV is a nasty virus that causes warts on any part of the body.

  5. Does HPV cause cancer? Yes!!! HPV is considered by most professionals to be one of the major causes of cervical cancer It is also a cause of many other types of cancer including anal, vaginal, penile, and oropharyngeal (cancer of the oropharynx, usually caused by tobacco and/or alcohol)

  6. What are the risk factors of HPV and cervical cancer? HPV causes almost 100% of all cervical cancer cases It is especially dangerous because it is very hard to detect. HPV’s that cause genital warts are not usually associated with cervical cancer, the HPV’s that cause cancer are hidden or don’t cause genital warts at all.

  7. What HPV’s cause cancer? There are many types of HPV, but not all HPV’s will cause cancer

  8. Who is at risk? • The more sexual partners that you and your sexual partners have, the more likely you are to contract the virus. • People under the age of 25 are most likely to have an active HPV infection.

  9. What are the benefits of Gardasil? If given at age nine, the vaccine prevents against HPV through the teenage years which are the years that one is most likely to contract HPV. Although It doesn’t protect against all types of HPV, It does prevent the two leading cancer-causing types which account for 70 percent of all cervical cancer cases.

Let’s compare the risks and benefits… Benifits • Prevents the most common cancer causing HPV’s • Prevents genital warts • Prevents the spread of HPV • Prevents 70% of cervical cancers Risks • 0.05% of people who receive the shot experience side effects • Of those, 94% of reported side effects are not serious and include pain and redness at the injection site, dizziness, nausea, headaches and fainting • The other 6% report serious side effects including blood clots, Guillain-Barre syndrome, and death. These side effects were not proven to have any relation to the vaccine.

  11. Looks like the benefits far outweigh the risks, and Gardasil is a vaccine that should be administered to girls as young as 9 years old.
