The Digital Divide • The gap between people of different regions where one country or group has more technology capabilities than another, also applies to generation differences • Schools and Jobs are starting to use more tech-centric elements to get more done • “within the next decade about 80 percent of jobs one would need to know how to use digital technology…” (fcc.gov)

Grandparent and Parents (Non-digital Natives) –Prior to the 1980’s WWII Generation Baby Boomer Mary Crivello (Parent): Had a phone Did not start using a computer until in her 20’s for work Prior she used an electric type writer • Clyde Fullerton (Grandparent): • Not at all in the digital divide • Use of technology was phones, otherwise not much

Brother and Sister (the beginnings of the Digital Era-from mid1980’s to present) Sarah (1980’s-early 2000’s) James (1990’s-present) Almost always wanted to go outside Grew up playing some video games and use of the computer a bit Wants the latest and greatest now But still wants to go outside • Was not into much of technology • Did not use much of a computer until High School-was an IBM • Did not get a cell phone until her 20’s

5. My Nieces (Full on Digital Natives) • Haylie and Kenzy: • Tech-centric generation (Born after 2000) • All they want to do is play on technology (computers, iPod/Pads, video games etc.) • Needs “outside time” • School has links on their website for them to use

6. Conclusion • There’s a huge gap between the Pre-WW2 generation and the beginnings of Digital Natives • The gap is also huge between the new generation of today and their parents (almost as great) • The divide is increasing with each generation but the divide also decreases because of newer technology
