  1. Friday, February 7, 2014 Anthem: Chapter 1 Respond 2 of the 5 questions (listed below). Use no less than 3 sentences in your responses. 1- To help create setting, Ayn Rand uses color imagery. Find two examples in the chapter. What colors does the author use? What image is she trying to convey? 2- The first page of Anthem begins, “It is a sin to write this.” Using textual evidence, explain why Equality is committing a sin when he writes. 3- Why does Equality refer to himself as “we”? 4- Would you want to be friends with someone like Equality? Why or why not? 5- Ayn Rand wanted Equality 7-2521 to stand out from his brothers. Explain how she accomplished this by contrasting Equality 7-2521’s physical attributes to those of his fellow men.

  3. Tuesday, February 11, 2014 Anthem: Chapter 2 • Define these terms found on pages 48 and 49. • Uncharted Forest – A forest which has no paths. The ancient trees guard the secrets within. Some say that ruins from the Unmentionable Times are hidden there. • Unmentionable Times – A time of great technology before the Great Rebirth. All the technology was lost to the world at some point in time. • Evil Ones – Men who fought in a war against others during the Unmentionable Times. They were conquered, and burned at the stake. • Script Fire – Also called the “Dawn of the Great Rebirth,” the Script Fire was the mass burning of all the texts of the Evil Ones, which held their words. The fires burned for three months across cities. • Great Rebirth – A time of reform that came across the world after the evil ones were killed and their scripts burnt. • Unspeakable Word – A word that used to be in the language of man, but was lost. Now, no one may speak or hear the word. Saying it is punishable by death.
