  2. Giving evidence • It is crucial that you PEE in your writing to make it as accurate as possible.

  3. But what is the evidence? • The evidence you need to use is anything from the text. If you make a point then you need to refer back to the text to show where you’re getting your ideas from and that you’re not just making them up. • Look at the text from Act 2, Scene 1. How do we know that it is late at night?

Giving Evidence • BANQUO How goes the night, boy? • FLEANCE The moon is down; I have not heard the clock. • BANQUO And she goes down at twelve. • FLEANCE I take 't 'tis later, sir. • BANQUO Hold, take my sword. There's husbandry in heaven; Their candles are all out. • Finding the evidence is one thing -but how do we write it?

  5. Giving evidence: Paraphrasing • This means taking what is said in the text and putting it in your own words. You do need to make sure that you keep the meaning the same. • Their candles are all out becomes • Banquo notes that it is very dark and overcast as none of the stars can be seen.

Giving evidence :Your turn … • I dreamt last night of the three weird sisters: To you they have show'd some truth. • Becomes • Banquo tries to get Macbeth to talk about the witches and reminds him that they seem to have spoken accurately about what would happen to Macbeth. • Remember that the greater amount of information you include, the more you are showing that you understand the text.

  7. Giving evidence: Quoting • This means taking the exact words that are used in the text. You must always use quotation marks (single speech marks). You must make sure that the sentence still makes sense. • Banquo changes the subject to talk about the meeting they had with the ‘three weird sisters’. He sounds a little concerned that they ‘show’dsome truth’ to Macbeth. • The quotations are only short but make your point and link what you say back to the text. You do not have to include whole lines but can choose selected phrases.

  8. Giving evidence Your turn … • Look at Act 2, Scene 2, lines 44-47. Write a sentence or two to show what Lady Macbeth thinks of how her husband is acting after the murder. • “Who was it that thus cried? Why, worthy thane, You do unbend your noble strength, to think So brainsickly of things. Go get some water, And wash this filthy witness from your hand” (2.2.44-47).

  9. Lady Macbeth is scornful of the way that Macbeth is acting and warns that he will ‘unbend’ his ‘noble strength’ if he carries on worrying about it. She argues that he just needs some ‘water’ to clear him of the deed.

  10. Giving evidence: Putting it all together Using quotations from the text to provide your evidence and using the same PEE structure, write a detailed paragraph in which you explain how Macbeth feels after he has murdered Duncan. See handout as we write a paragraph together as a class. Remember that you will be required to do this on your final exam!
