Origins • Created by Three boys at the Rugby School • William Webb Ellis was the first to run with a football and "who with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it“ -1823 • January 26th, 1871 at meeting was assembled for 21 clubs to decide the rules and regulations of Rugby • First International Rugby Game held in Edinburgh between Scotland and England
Rules and Play • Field is 100 meters by 70 meters wide and has two “try zones” • Basic objective is to run the ball to the try zone and constantly pass backwards • Try is worth five points and kicking the extra points are worth two • Drop kicks, kicks for penalties are all worth three points • Play is governed by: • The Ruck- when both sides are vying for the ball on the ground without going offsides • Maul-same as a ruck but on ones feet being pushed back and forth for posseion of the ball • Line Out- when the ball goes out of bounds the team that did not kick it out throws the ball back in • Scrum- A set piece off of a penalty • When an offsides, knock-on or any other penalty occurs than the other team may chose a scrum, kick for penalty, or a quick start
