  3. Construction • Construction ordered by Emperor Nero after Great Fire of Rome • 4 years (64-68 AD) • A party house with more than 300 rooms

  4. After Nero’s Death • Nero committed suicide in 68 AD • Damnatio Memoriae of Nero ordered • Domus Aurea stripped of marble, jewels and ivory • All was built over

  5. Renaissance • Artists of the time found Domus Aurea • Raphael and Michaelangelo influenced by the art

  6. Today • Parts are open to public • Much of it still undiscovered
