History of the Cucumber • Has been cultivated for at least 3,000 years in Western Asia • The Spaniards, through the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, brought cucumbers to the Americas in 1494 • Next to the tomato, cabbage, and onion, the cucumber is the fourth most widely cultivated vegetable in the world

  3. CUCUMBERS • Related to watermelons, zucchini, and pumpkins • Grow on vines that sprawl along the ground • Usually grow to around 9 to 12 inches long and are cylindrical in shape • There are two types of cucumbers: slicing cucumbers, which are eaten fresh, and pickling cucumbers
