  3. What is e-Safety? E-Safety is concerned with safeguarding children and young people in the digital world E-safety is not about restricting children, but educating them about the risks as well as the benefits so they can feel confident and happy online It is about being educated ourselves to be able to support and help young people Digital Divide = “Digital Natives” vs “Digital Immigrants”

  4. How much do you know? What is IM? What does ‘F2F’mean? What does “ASL” mean? How old should you be to have a bebo account? What does “POS” mean? Can it be a criminal offence to send someone a threatening message? 1 in ? children have met someone face to face that they met online?

Experiences of Children and Young People • 80% of 5-16 year olds have internet access at home: • 50% have broadband • 93% have a PC at home – one-third have their own PC • 80% have their own TV – and 70% have their own DVD player • Almost 60% have their own MP3 player • Two-thirds own a mobile phone

  10. Cyberbullying What is Cyberbullying? "Cyberbullying" is the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) particularly mobile phones and the internet, to deliberately upset someone.   11. Kent’s Context • One of the largest Local Authorities in the UK • Population of 327,000 children and young people • Mix of rural and urban areas, affluence and deprivation • 603 educational establishments including 33 Grammar Schools

  12. Mark Bedford • Mark Bedford, aka Supalover666, aged 21 from Ontario, Canada • Canadian police inquiry involving Kent Police which began after the computers of 42 girls aged between 9 and 14 were hacked into • Subsequently sentenced for 3 years imprisonment Who’s this?

Piloted CEOP education programme “Thinkuknow” for children and young people in 2006 Rolled out to: All 105 Secondary Schools Youth Workers – repeat this year All Kent Police Safer Schools Partnership Coordinators Kent Libraries Families Services Team TUK training is on the Kent Safeguarding Children Board Training Calendar Primary Training being developed by Advisory Service and e-Safety Officer Kent and CEOP

Parental Awareness • Staff Training to those who support parents across agencies • Training to Foster Carers • Schools • Parents evenings by e-Safety officer • working with young people to present to parents • Encouraging schools to tie in with other events • Delivery to offices and workplaces • Leaflets

What can we do? • Schools could: • Have an e-Safety Policy and a designated e-Safety Officer/coordinator • Teach e-Safety across the curriculum – ICT, PSHE, English, History etc and as an ongoing topic from KS1 onwards • Involve and engage with the home where possible! • Have AUP/Code of Conduct to protect staff and pupils • Educate all staff and ensure they are aware of policies and procedures and update annually • Consider what support there is for staff in the event of a disclosure (e-Safety and Cyberbullying) and ensure there is a clear reporting mechanism/flowchart • Be aware: • e-Safety is a safeguarding, not technology issue • Safeguarding children is everyone’s responsibility • “Protecting children whilst they are in our care and educating them for when they are not”
