  1. ACCESS MANAGEMENT? Preserve values of both public and private investment by formally managing location, design and type of access to abutting property BASIC PRINCIPLES: Classify road systems by primary function; shared access & interconnectivity Limit direct access to roads with higher functional classification Separate conflict areas and emphasize through movements Locate approaches to minimize interference with traffic operations Use proper openings in terms of radius & width (curbing, medians, etc.)

  2. Access Management & Coordinated Reviews… Corridor Groups? “ a process that provides or manages access to land development while simultaneously preserving the flow of the traffic on the surrounding road system in terms of safety, capacity, and speed ” Regional interdisciplinary advisory forums that advocate needs for all road users, one project at a time -Ben Feldhausen

  3. Multi-modal Corridor Management… Formal collaborative input at any project stage Community partnerships: MDOT, Road Commission, Local Agencies (Cities, Townships), County & Regional Planning, Sheriff’s Office, MSP, (Economic Alliances, Developers, elected officials, others)

  4. Goals & Objectives… • TEAM GOALS • Traffic Safety; efficient traffic operations yield improved capacity • Accessibility; traffic circulation, adjacent opportunities & overall function • Direct Relationships; Master Plan, Recreation Plan and Future Projects • Reducing Congestion, Conflicts, Crash Experience & Pedestrian Exposure • Local Management; Corridor Teams are advisory groups • Geometric Control remains with Road Authority • KEY OBJECTIVES • Educate local jurisdictions; develop a comprehensive corridor plan • Adopt local access management zoning (amend land use ordinances) • Develop a uniform coordinated site plan review process (MDOT/Agencies) • Grow area with proven planning components (Access Regulations) • Proactive long-term corridor teams to address corridor solutions

  5. Thoughts to Consider… • Set regular meeting schedule (ie-third Tuesday) • Consider frequency of other local meetings • Create formal documents with detailed group input • Establish a process; commitments - support – assignment of tasks • Local ordinance adoption is key; Consistent language / Continuity • Adoption phase may take considerable time / coordination • Links developed with other community plans - ordinances • Advocate collaborative input • Project Mapping and Photos during coordinated reviews • Notify (educate) others issuing permits • Encourage diversity of involvement; build alliances • Expect a considerable time investment at onset • Understand the differing needs for each community partner; (jurisdictional requirements vary--MDOT-CRC-City-Township) • Identify & explain problems – Suggest solutions & document success • Forums to advocate regional corridor needs & accomplish unique goals

  6. Uniformity and Consistency… Credibility and Trust… Agreements Community Corridor & Traffic Safety Coalitions?
