Why do we date? • Recreation- to fill time between puberty and marriage • A way to gain social status based on whom and how often one dates • To meet ego needs • Leads to mate selection • Helps prepare you for marriage • You recognize how words and actions can affect others • Learn about members of the opposite sex

  3. Choosing a dating partner…… • Factors that attract you to your friends will also attract you to your dating partners • Physical attraction • Social group • Personality traits • Extracurricular activities

  4. What should dating accomplish? • Increased knowledge of and experience in forming relationships with members of the opposite sex • Increased self-knowledge- interests, values, communication patterns etc. • Increased knowledge of intimate relationships • Experience and knowledge that will enhance decision-making skills in mate selection

  5. Types of Dating: • Group dating- -each member of group has fun without feeling especially close to any one person -get to know all members of group -easy way to begin dating -can interact with opposite sex without any pressure

  6. Types of Dating Continued • Random dating- -allows people to date more than one person at a time -chance to socialize with many different people -everyone grows socially -learning about getting along with others

  7. Types of Dating Continued • Steady dating- agree to date only one person -provides several types of security -knowing someone likes and cares for you -knowing that someone understands and enjoys being with you -can be yourself, without fear of rejection

  8. Types of dating (continued)…… -do not have to worry about spending the evening with someone you don’t know -security of having a date when you “need” one (not a good reason to date!) -may lead him or her own -commitment involved steady dating encourages the couple resolve their conflicts

  9. Caring more about another than yourself Want significant other to be happy Look for ways to express affection You grow in love (as you learn more about one another) You know them well Takes time and effort Unselfish Often confused with love Intense-feeling of admiration You can be infatuated with someone you’ve never met A fantasized image Short-lived Ends quickly if one becomes impatient, bored, or dissatisfied Self-centered Hormone influenced Love vs. Infatuation
