Overview of Novell SLES 9Novell Linux Versions • Novell offers a variety of 32 bit and 64 bit enterprise Linux products derived from openSUSE. • The latest Novell Linux products are SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and Desktop (SLED) version 10. • Novell’s previous Linux releases were SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 (SLES 9) and Novell Linux Desktop 9 (NLD 9). • SLES 9 was chosen as the first Linux OS for the xw460c because there is a large SLES 9 installed base and many customers and ISVs have not yet moved to version 10. • Comparison of SLES 9 to openSUSE: http://www.novell.com/products/server9/comparative.html [Rev. # or date] – HP Restricted
Overview of Novell SLES 9Service Packs and Certifications • Novell’s Linux products are updated via Service Packs. SP3 is the latest service pack for SLES 9. SP4 will be released in Oct/Nov 2007. • Novell has a process by which hardware platforms can be certified either by Novell or hardware vendors. Approved certifications are posted on Novell’s web site at http://developer.novell.com/yessearch • The xw4400, xw6400, xw8400, and xw9400 are all certified on 32 bit and 64 bit SLES 9, SLES 10, and SLED 10. • Certification of the xw460c on SLES 9 is scheduled for completion in August 2007. However, there are differences between our Red Hat and Novell Linux product offerings for desktop workstations. SLES 9 on the xw460cxw460c Releases • The “Mustang” xw460c release occurred in July. The “Packard” refresh is planned for September 2007. • For the Mustang release (today): • Only highly qualified customers will be able to use SLES 9 on the xw460c, working closely with an HP solution architect and with support provided by the WGBU Linux R&D team. • For the Packard release (September): • xw460c product structure will allow customers to order the HP Installer Kit for Linux (HPIKL) required for using SLES 9. • HP support for SLES 9 on the xw460c will be active. SLES 9 on the xw460cRGS and SLES 9 • RGS is required to utilize the NVIDIA graphics adapter with SLES 9 on the xw460c. • The user must configure the SLES 9 Xserver on the xw460c to use the NVIDIA adapter as desired. RGS is then used to: • Read the Xserver frame buffer contents • Transport it over the network to a client device • Provide keyboard and mouse inputs from client to xw460c Thanks to Dave Sweetser for this illustration. SLES 9 on the xw460cNovell Engagement for Level 4 Support • HP Customer Support will handle support levels 1-3. • If HP is unable to provide a solution or workaround to the customer, designated HP Internal Contacts are able to escalate the call to Novell Support (level 4). • Novell will acknowledge receipt of the call, assign an incident number, and provide feedback to HP on problem resolution. • If requested by HP and the customer, Novell will communicate directly to the customer and keep HP Customer Support informed. • 24/7 access to the Novell Support Center is available to HP Internal Contacts. • Details of this process are available from Ricardo Sarti.
