  3. Studies • Studies have been conducted trying to create a link between cell phone use and cancer. • There are many different risks for receiving cancer from cell phone use.

  4. Length of Exposure • Prolonged use can have many different affects on the body and the brain • Type of exposure can lead to different risks or have severe the risk may be • Regular cell phone users have a 70% greater risk of brain cancer • Cell phone use for over one decade increases risk by 30-200%

  5. Radiation • For every 100 hours of cell phone use, the risk of brain cancer increases by 5% • For every year of cell phone use, the risk of brain cancer increases by 8% • After 10 or more years of digital cell phone use the risk increases by 280%

  6. Cell Phones Do Not Cause Cancer

  7. How The Brain Works • Schwann Cells • What is cancer? • Known risk factors for brain cancer • Risk of cancer also increases with age. • According to the American Cancer Society, most studies show patients with brain tumors do not report more cell phone use overall than the controls. • If cell phones were causing cancer, we would expect a rise in the rate of brain cancer and other related cancers .

  8. Radiation We are exposed to many different forms of radiation every day. These are all considered non-ionizing radiation and do not cause cancer .

  9. How Cell Phones Work • Lower than ionizing • Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) • Cell phone radiation levels are tested and certified to meet the safe levels established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) .

  10. Why Cellphones Do Not Cause Cancer • Failed studies • The 2003 Study • The Interphone Study is the largest health related case control study on the topic. • The most recent information on cell phones and cancer was discussed on the Early Show on October 21st, 2011.

  11. Questions?

  12. Message Received • 91% of the population, 285 million people, use cell phones. In theory, each of these people would develop cancer because of their use of cell phones, however as stated previously, only about 22,000 new cases of brain cancer will be reported this year. All of the information presented to you today should make it clear that it is nearly impossible for there to be a link between cell phones and cancer. If you’re still not convinced, check out the YouTube video that we’ve emailed to you, and decide for yourself.
