About IUP • 14,000 Students • 1,800 Employees • Multi-level Public Institution: • Bachelor, Master, Doctoral, Clock Hour programs • Banner Implementation 1998-2000 • All five base modules and four web products
IUP Banner Environment • Banner 5.X • Oracle 8i • Sun Solaris 2.6 Database and Web Servers • Windows 2000 • NT Forms Servers
Overview • Need For Prerequisite Report • Solution • Issues • Future plans • Questions
Need For Prerequisite Report • Business college working on national accreditation • Students early register in anticipation for meeting junior standing requirements within college • Non-business majors in classes for business majors only
Early Registration at IUP • Students “early register” for courses. This is done DURING the previous semester • For prerequisite checking, student has successfully completed prerequisite course with specific passing grade, OR is currently registered in the prerequisite course, with ASSUMPTION that student will earn minimum successful grade
Current Solution • Create Batch Prerequisite Checking Report: • Only for students registered in business courses • Use SCT Web Prerequisite Checking as as a starting point
Current Solution – Continued • SWRPREQ – Pro*C report • Term is only parameter • Does prerequisite checking for all business courses and reports errors • Takes about 40-60 minutes to run • Can be run by end-user
Issues • Discussed dropping students from course, but deemed too risky • Must respect ALL permits that were issued • When SCT Web Prerequisite Checking code changes, ours must change as well • Timing – when should this be run? After ALL previous semester grades are entered and corrected
Additional Issue Details • If batch prereq checking enforced automatically, students who had courses dropped could lose financial aid • Students need to be notified that courses were dropped; at least notified to check their schedules by a certain date • Problem with available seats in alternate courses if rescheduling were necessary
Future plan? • Searching for way to run this in live mode to do batch prereq checking • Timing is important for financial aid, maintaining full-time enrollment status, fee assessments and payments • Create a workflow process that would notify students via email that they have been disenrolled
