  1. The Effect of Hydra Head Activator on the Regeneration Rates of Heads and Tails of Planaria (Dugesia Tigrina) By Paris Thatos

  2. Need • Only by learning more and more about regeneration can we hope to understand and, one day, reproduce its effects in people.

  3. Abstract • This study focuses on the regenerative rates of a species of planaria, and how they could be manipulated through the use of a neuropeptide that is known to influence regeneration in another regenerative species, the freshwater polyp, hydra. Individual planaria were dissected into a head half and a tail half, then were kept in separate Petri-dishes, each with a pre-determined concentration of the neuropepride (Hydra Head Activator). Their rates of regeneration were observed, then graded on the blastema growth using a numerical scale (1 - 7)

  4. Knowledge Base • Planaris were dissected with a razor, and then kept in petri dishes full of the pre-determined concentration of HA • A webcam was used to observe the blastema • A seven stage scale was used to score the data

  5. Hypothesis • H0 - When treated with the HA, planaria heads will regenerate as quickly as those untreated, and tails will instead regenerate heads • Ha - When treated with the HA, planaria heads and tails will not regenerate as quickly as those untreated, tails will regenerate tails

  6. Project Goals • The goal of this study is to find out if the neuropeptides used to influence hydra regeneration will play the same role in planaria regeneration
