  2. 被动句 Passive Sentences The passive voice in Chinese is similar to English. However, in Chinese, a passive sentence commonly occurs in the following two structures:

  3. 被动句 Passive Sentences I. Unmarked in structure, called “notional passive voice.”It usually occurs as a topic-comment sentence. For example:

  4. 被动句 Passive Sentences • Your check has been received. 你的支票收到了。 • The homework is finished. 作业写完了。

  5. 被动句 Passive Sentences • The money has all been spent. 钱花光了。 • The letter has been sent out. 信寄出去了。

  6. 被动句 Passive Sentences II. Marked in structure with 被，叫，让 to indicate the passive voice. This is commonly known as the “passive construction.”The passive construction is illustrated below. O + 被 + S + (给) + V + others 叫 让

  7. 被动句 Passive Sentences O + 被 + S + (给) + V + others 叫 让 叫 and 让 are more colloquial than 被给 is optional with 被 but usually is present with 叫 and 让 to avoid ambiguity.

  8. 被动句 Passive Sentences For example: My mirror was broken by my brother. • 我的镜子被弟弟打破了。 • 我的镜子叫弟弟给打破了。 • 我的镜子让弟弟给打破了。

  9. 被动句 Passive Sentences The doer (subject) is required when using the marker 叫 and 让, but is optional when using the marker 被. • The car was smashed (by Lao Wang). 车子被（老王）撞坏了。 • The car was smashed by Lao Wang. 车子叫/让老王给撞坏了。

  10. Examples of 被 Sentences • Xiao Xie was taken to the hospital. 小谢被送进医院了。 • The cake was eaten by my brother. 蛋糕被我弟弟吃了。

  11. Examples of 被 Sentences • The dog was killed by a car. 小狗被车撞死了。 • The notes were taken away by my classmates. 笔记被同学拿走了。

  12. Examples of 被 Sentences • The tree was knocked down by a bus. 树被公共汽车撞倒了。

  13. Negating 被 Construction To negate the 被 construction, 没有 is placed before 被. DO NOT use 了 at the end of the sentence. • The notes were not taken away by my classmates. 笔记没有被同学拿走。 • The dog was not killed by a car. 小狗没有被车撞死。

  14. Turn active into passive: • 常天取走了钱。 钱被常天取走了。 • 我打破了镜子。 镜子被我打破了。 • 他怎么会知道了这件事情？ 这件事情怎么会被他知道了？

  15. Turn active into passive: • 我没有撞倒树。 树没有被我撞倒。 • 他没有看见我。 我没有被他看见。 • 我没有撞坏车。 车没有被我撞坏。

  16. Turn active into passive: • 朋友把他送进了医院。 他被朋友送进了医院。 • 他把我的笔记拿走了。 我的笔记被他拿走了。 • 他把小笼包都吃了。 小笼包被他都吃了。
