PWCS Instructional Technology Mission & Vision Statements • Instilling 21st Century Competencies in Tomorrow’s Successful Global Citizens • It is the vision of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) to provide equitable access and effective use of existing and emerging technology to engage and challenge diverse learners in preparation for global citizenship in an increasingly complex information society.

Principles Guiding the PWCS Instructional Technology Vision • Creating innovative learning opportunities and monitoring student progress necessary to promote high achievement of each student, • Integrating research supported state of the art technologies Divisionwide to promote a World-Class education, • Continuing to work with the community to foster public involvement with, and understanding of our educational programs, and • Collaborating with stakeholders in the design, development, and maintenance of an effective, flexible, and reliable technology infrastructure.

  4. Meeting the Vision and Mission • In order to better meet the PWCS Technology Vision and Mission, the Office of Instructional Technology Services has developed the ITRT Transition Plan.

  5. What is the ITRT Transition Plan? • A plan implemented by the Office of Instructional Technology to assist schools to meet the role of the ITRT job description and to improve the support of instructional technology across the Division.

  6. The Goal of the ITRT Transition Plan • To have technology integrated into classroom instruction on a daily basis to enhance student content knowledge.

  8. What Should the ITRT Job Look Like? • ITRTs in action at Ashland, Ellis, Occoquan Elementary, Bull Run Middle, and Hylton High School.

Essential Understandings of the ITRT Transition Plan • The ITRT role will transition from being in the rotation schedule (at some schools) to one that better matches the PWCS ITRT job descriptionand VDOE requirements. • Schools who already fully meet the ITRT job description will be recognized and receive rewards (yet to be determined). • In the 2012-13 school year, principals who want to pilot fully removing ITRTs from the rotation schedule will receive assistance and incentives (yet to be determined).

The Nuts and Bolts of the Plan • Every principal will complete a needs assessment to identify where each school fits on the continuum of meeting the current ITRT job description. • Schools will have three options for the 2012-13 school year to implement the plan; • Option 1 - remove ITRT from the rotation schedule a minimum of two ½ days per week; • Option 2 - remove ITRT from the rotation schedule a minimum of one full day per week; or • Option 3 – pilot fully removing the ITRT from the rotation schedule.

The Nuts and Bolts of the Plan • Schools will develop a school-based plan in collaboration with the Supervisor of Instructional Technology to meet the ITRT job description. • ITRTs will remain building-based for funding; however central direction will be given in collaboration with principals for how ITRTs are shared/assigned/hired/released/reassigned across the School Division, and evaluated. • Information and Instructional Technology will work to build collaborative teams of TSSPECs and ITRTs.

The Nuts and Bolts of the Plan • Implementation of school-based ITRT transition plans will begin September 2012, with quarterly data checks to assess the success of the plan. • Three new ITRTs will be hired in the Division with two having Divisionwide responsibilities, but they will be placed at two alternative schools, supporting them as well. The third ITRT will be assigned to the new Ronald Wilson Reagan Middle School.

Looking Ahead . . • By the 2013-14 school year, the ITRT job description will be fully implemented at the middle and high school levels with a focus on assisting classroom teachers to integrate technology into daily instruction to enhance student content knowledge. • Recommendations for the elementary schools will be brought forth to the Superintendent’s Staff in December 2012.

  14. Support and Guidance • Schools will be given full support from the Offices of Information and Instructional Technology (IT2) to meet the ITRT job description. • Specific guidelines for implementing the ITRT transition plan will be forthcoming. • Professional development will be provided for ITRTs, to meet their full job description beginning in the spring of 2012 and continuing through 2012-13.
