  4. M1/SC 37 • Started in January 2002 – Response to 9/11 • Commercial standards (formats, APIs, etc.) • Emphasis on verification (as opposed to identification)for physical and logical access • Physical access to buildings • Network access control via terminals • Drivers licenses / border control

  5. SC 37 Work Groups (WGs) • WG 1 - Harmonized biometric vocabulary • WG 2 - Biometric Technical Interfaces • WG 3 - Biometric Data Interchange Formats • WG 4 - Biometric Functional Architecture and Related Profiles • WG 5 - Biometric Testing and Reporting • WG 6 - Cross-Jurisdictional and Societal Aspects of Biometrics

  6. M1.6 / WG 6 • M1.6 is the US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to WG 6 • No national projects in the US to date • International projects include • Two part Technical Report (TR) • Pictograms, Icons and Symbols • New Work Item on Biometrics and Identity Management • Technical reports offer guidance; standards have mandatory requirements

  7. WG 6 Projects • Two part Technical Report (TR) on guidance (24714) • First part is general guidance for all biometrics • Second part is intended to be more specific guidance but still in early draft stage • Pictograms, Icons and Symbols • Multi-part standard • US recently contributed fingerprint icons testing report

  8. Finger placement: Index finger (right/left) Thumbs (individual and both) Slap (4 fingers) (right/left). 10. Questions (1 of 2) • Operations Community: • What specific usability needs do you have that you would like to see standards or best practices address? • Usability Experts: • What testing is ripe for standards development? • Standards Developers: • What testing needs have you identified to support standards development?

  11. Questions (2 of 2) • Are mechanisms in place to transfer needs and knowledge between these communities? • Are usability researchers & experts willing to engage in the biometric standards development process • (ie submitting contributions, editing drafts, etc.)?
