  3. Objective of this talk How using the Kew thesaurus via iLink helps our users to reach their search goals OR How to turn a keen amateur into a semi-professional botanist.

  4. Background • Unicorn implemented in 1991 • WebCat / iLink installed 2001 • Live on Intranet since May 2002 • Launch on Internet in Autumn 2002 as part of iKEW : a new institution-wide electronic information provision strategy for the 21st century.

  5. Kew Users • Internal: Kew staff, mostly scientists, plus visitors, all have high level of botanical expertise and knowledge of Latin nomenclature • External: Subject specialists worldwide, plus lay-people with knowledge of vernacular plant names

  6. Our Thesaurus • No adequate thesaurus available, so using various sources for terminology a) CAB thesaurus (Agriculture & Health terminology) b) Vascular plant families and genera by R.K. Brummitt • Currently terms entered during cataloguing • Future possible download of terminology

Improvements in theory • Display of cross references brings the serendipity of browsing to online catalogue • Enhances search experience by suggesting terminology to broaden or narrow search • Allows for more in depth interrogation and investigation of our holdings • Increases accessibility and usability of whole collection

  14. Improvements in practice Internal users only: • Staff alerted to literature down to species level • Positive feedback regards online browsing of plant families up and down the hierarchy • Found misclassified items, which were linked by thesaurus terms, but had been assigned wrong shelf mark!
