  4. Examples of Antithesis and explanation The Scarlet Letter (119): "He, if it stand with his good pleasure, can cure; or he can kill!" •This quote shows antithesis because Hawthorne places two juxtaposing ideas, cure or kill, it two back-to-back clauses. (Hannah Jumper) • The Scarlet Letter (76) "She stood apart from moral interests, yet close beside them..." • This is an example of antithesis, because Hawthorns puts the contrasting ideas of being far and close to moral interests in opposing clauses. Ryan Riedmueller Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (78): "That cheerful eye, under the influence of slavery, soon became red with rage." •This quote expresses the contrast of Douglass's internal thoughts before and after Mrs. Auld succumbed to the torturous behavior of typical slave owners. The "cheer" contrasts with the "rage." (Cameron Neuhoff)

  5. Effects of Antithesis • Antithesis is used to: • Convey some sense of difficulty in a person or idea by admitting opposite or nearly opposite truths- • •Success makes men proud; failure makes them wise. • Antithesis in a sentence establishes a clear, contrasting relationship between two ideas by joining them together or contrasting them, often in similar structure. Human beings are inveterate categorizers, so the mind creates a definite and systematic relationship between ideas: • •That's one small step for a man, one giant leapfor mankind. --Neil Armstrong
