  2. The Location of the Bratislava Region Warszawa 656 km Prague 291 km Vienna 60 km Budapest 201 km The Bratislava region is the smallest region in Slovakia, but the most developed region. Its location at the confluence of the rivers Danube and Morava, on the ridge of the Lesser Carpathians and next to the place where Austrian, Hungarian and Slovak frontiers meet in one point, has, since time immemorial predetermined the role Bratislava as an important defence point, trading place, crossroads of transport routes, area of agriculture and, above all, vineyards.

  4. Bratislava Region Bratislava, the capital of the Slovak Republic, is a town which lived the life of a multi-national metropolis for many years throughout the history. Whether called Preslau, Pressburg, Pozsony or Bratislava, the policy, education, religion and good wines dominated its atmosphere, no matter which nationality - Hungarian, German or Slovak - historically prevailed among its citizens. Bratislava became to be the most developed Region of Slovakia in economy, social, research and technical sector.

  7. The Population Laying on the area of 2.053 km2 Bratislava Region covers 4,2% of Slovak territory with 11,4% share on population. On labourmarket of Slovakia participate the region with 27% of employment. 70,8% of labour force is active in a sector of services (in Bratislava City=73,5%). Civil service and defence (12,6%), transport, post and telecommunication services are the biggest employers in the sector of services (11,3% ). Unemployment in Bratislava is the lawest one (3,71%) among all regions of Slovakia (13,65%).

Most Important Sectors The main industrial branches in Bratislava are the petrochemical, chemical and food industry, wood and glass industry, printing industry, mechanical engineering and electrotechnical industry, which represent more than 3/4 of the industrial potential of the Bratislava´s region. The export ability of the region is assured mainly by automotive production of co.Volkswagen Slovakia. Industry in the region includes all major sectors. Compared with other regions in Slovakia, these sectors are densely concentrated in Bratislava. The South of the region specialises in industries that are agriculturally related. The main industrial sectors are : • chemical • automotive • machinery • electro-technical • food industry • building Slovnaft a.s. - (petroleum refinery)

Business in Bratislava Region Those sectors utilise advantages of the region – relatively high qualification of employees, developed transport and technical infrastructure, activite foreign trade and a high demand for goods and services. Trade and services dominate industrial production in the Bratislava region. In the past, the Bratislava region was an important agricultural producer. Currently, regional production has shifted to industry, trade and services. Bratislava´s business envorinment is typical with the high concentration of business (production, trade, services). From this total number app. 52,000 have trade licence and 18,500 are companies registered in Trade Register of SR.

Pezinok – charakteristics of the region • Good location – only 20 km from Bratislava, near to the highway and main railway route • Pezinok - tourism area– within the regional tourism strategy • Specific mentality of the people –strongly oriented to cultural activities, local patriots (keeping traditions) and have high level of education • City - many of historical monuments/buildings destroyed or poorly renovated, 66 were saved

  18. Small Carpathians Wine Route A suitable climate for the productions of various grains and vegetables keeps many agricultural businesses, and they are attractive for foreign investors. Production of meat and vegetables and grains is designed to supply the Slovak and especially Bratislava market. Other typical agricurtural sectors in the region are: growing of fruits, vegetables and grapes. Production of wine is typical in the region of Male Karpaty.

Example of projects in the region • Regional Development Agency Senec – Pezinok involved in the following programmes: Leonardo da Vinci, European Social Fund, European Regional Development Fund, Sokrates, Phare, INTERREG IIIA... • Co- operation with the City Council (one of the founder of the RRA Senec – Pezinok) • Work with „disadvantaged groups “ - employability: • School leavers – further education and qualification plus job stage in communities, stages of school leavers in the agency • Social inclusion platform creation • Over-regional employment strategy with Austria • Employment Action Plans created in co-operation with the representatives of the City Council of Pezinok

Pezinok Opportunities • Since 1996 - Tourism Development Plan annually assessed and updated • Pezinok citizens very interested to „promote“ the city (Local TV, newspapers every citizen of Pezinok is a guide“) • Project development - one departement at the City Council devoted to work with development projects • Low unemloyment • Co-operation with the Regional Development Agency

  21. Pezinok Risks • Strong pressure to liquidate viniculture and use the land for housing • Vandalism • Lack of „proffessional“ human resources (part-time work at municipal level) • Lack of connections between all activities that exists in the target area – Carpathian mountains • Legislation which is very restricted (nature protection, not always possible to use all available opportunities for tourism) • Recent delegation of responsibilities in the administration – lack of resources
