Miyajima(Itsukushima) • Miyajima merger with Hatsukaichi (2005) • Island located in Hiroshima Bay • Famous for shrines and natural preservations • Is considered a sacred land • Women were not allowed at the shrines • Elderly were shipped off the island • Pregnant women were not allowed near the shrine • Battle of Miyajima (1555)

Cultural differences • The moon rabbit (Jataka Tale 316) “When an old man begged for food, the monkey gathered fruits from the trees and the otter collected fish, while the jackal wrongfully pilfered a lizard and a pot of milk-curd. The rabbit, who knew only how to gather grass, instead offered its own body, throwing itself into a fire the man had built. The rabbit, however, was not burnt. The old man revealed himself to be Śakra and, touched by the rabbit's virtue, drew the likeness of the rabbit on the moon for all to see. It is said the lunar image is still draped in the smoke that rose when the rabbit cast itself into the fire.”

The Food! • Rice balls (onigiri) • Actually a triangle in shape • Can be mixed with furikake flavors (seaweed, egg, salmon, shrimp, wasabi, or sesame) • Plain rice with a filling such as tuna mayo, pickled plum, and kimchi pork. • Yokan • Thick jellied dessert made of red bean paste, agar, and sugar • Can also be made from white kidney bean paste • Can contain chopped chestnuts, persimmons, azuki beans, figs, and more.

Itsukushima Shrine • Miyajima the “Shrine-Island” and is known for it’s floating torii gate • Built in 1168 by Taira no Kiyomori at the end of the Heian Period • The torii gate is set out in the Seto Inland Sea, during high tide it looks as if sitting on the water • After sunset the shrine and the gate are illuminated, but you may not enter the shrine
