  4. What is the NGN-Initiative ? (NGN-I) • A consortium of representatives from leading industries, operators and academia • The first European open environment for strategic discussions on topics & issues of NGN. • A Project of the IST programme

  5. Mission • Facilitate and support smooth evolution of and transition to next generation networks • Resolve issues that create barriers for NGN deployment • Encourage clustering of activities • Create open environment for discussions on trends of technology • Create awareness among the actors

  6. Objectives • Assess the technologies and their significance for NGN • Achieve interoperability for seamless services through harmonised standards • Achieve compatibility and essential commonality between solutions and products • Identify new opportunities e.g. for convergence etc.

  7. Topics • Internet infrastructure • Mobile and Wireless • Optical Networks • Home Networks • Edge Devices • Network Management • Interworking, Interoperability • further topics may be added later

  11. How does NGN-I operate ? • Topic oriented: NGN-I Results Projects Collective Awareness & Dissemination Liaison with -IETF -ETSI -ITU -UMTS -3GPP -EURESCOM -IPv6 --etc IST Standards Roadmaps Benchmarking Reports Others Input & Feedback

  13. Methodology • Setting up of Topic Working Groups (TWG) on specific areas • Provide input to Benchmarking Reports and Roadmaps • Achieve understanding/ consensus/ co-ordination on standards contributions • Hold /attend workshops, conferences, cluster meetings

  14. Funding • Being an IST project, funding is available for 2 years for infrastructure and logistics. • Contributing Members (in EU Countries) get paid for certain work done. • General Members: free for 2 years • Sponsoring Members : Anticipated Fee: Euro 1500 p.a. • After 2 years NGN-I is expected to be run through membership contributions

  15. Time Frame • NGN-I as an IST Project • 1st January 2001 - 31st December 2002 • From 2003 onwards • self-funding structure
