  3. They went down the stairs. At the bottom, they were in a beautiful forest. All the trees were silver. The old soldier pulled a leaf from the tree. It made a loud noise. The youngest princess said again, “I feel uneasy. Did you hear a noise?” The oldest princess said, “Do not worry. It is nothing!”

  4. They came to another forest. All the trees were gold. The old soldier pulled a leaf from the tree. It made a loud noise. The youngest princess said again, “I feel uneasy. Did you hear a noise?” The oldest princess said, “Do not worry. It is nothing!”

  5. They came to a big lake. There were twelve little boats. In the boats were twelve handsome princes. The princes were waiting there for the princesses. One princess went into one boat. The old soldier stepped into the same boat as the youngest princess.

  6. As they were rowing over the lake, the prince who was in the boat with the youngest princess and the old soldier said, “I do not know why, I am rowing with all my strength, but we are going slow. I am quite tired. The boat seems very heavy.”

  7. “The weather is hot today”, said the youngest princess, “I am very warm, too.” On the other side of the lake was a castle. You could hear music coming from the castle. After they arrived, they went into the castle. Each prince danced with his princess. The old soldier, who was still invisible, danced with them too.

  8. When any of the princesses had a cup of wine set by her, the old soldier drank it. When she put the cup to her mouth. The cup was empty. The youngest princess was frightened. The oldest princess told her it was nothing.
