  2. Why be an Environmental Scientist? • Endangered species • Depletion of natural resources • Commitment to preserving nature • Get to study and visit beautiful and exotic places and wildlife. Whale Shark Scuba Diver

What Do They Do? • Environmental Researcher—goes out and takes samples or measurements and analyzes them or takes them to be analyzed. • Environmental Policy-Maker—determine how to avoid environmental problems in the future. • Public education or teach in a school. • Lab work, computer work, data analysis, etc. • Entry-level candidates come from all fields. • May not always be financially rewarding, but makes you feel good—that counts for something.

Endangered Species • Corals—pollution and over-fishing have led to a lack of nutrients needed for coral reefs to survive. • Pandas—1600 giant pandas scattered around Southwest China—population growth and natural resource consumption has pushed these pandas onto small portions of forest. • Snow Leopards—Loss of prey and herders are threatening the small Asian population of 4000-7000. Herds of sheep and other animals push away wild prey and herders kill the leopards in revenge for attacking the sheep.

World Wildlife Fund • World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Mission: To advance biodiversity conservation worldwide through the development and application of innovative scientific principles, tools and information. • Giant pandas, tigers, whales, dolphins, rhinos, elephants, marine turtles, and great apes • These species need the most help to survive and their survival helps other animals in their ecosystems.

  6. Projects to Help These Species • Corals—WWF is researching the effects of “bleaching,” or the loss of Zooxanthellae algae in coral, and the recovery of the algae before the coral dies. This algae leaves the coral because of pollution or rising temperatures—it carries out photosynthesis for itself and for the coral. • Pandas—The WWF conducted an in-depth census of pandas with the Chinese government. They have also helped protect, enlarge, and create panda preserves in China. • Snow Leopards—The WWF has created an anti-poaching team and is helping an organization that rewards herders for protecting snow leopards.

  7. Jobs With the WWF-Policy Director • The WWF “seeks a Policy Director to be responsible for promoting conservation of the Amazon Basin through development and implementation of a regional policy strategy focusing on infrastructure and protected areas. The successful candidate will work to positively influence investments of regional, multi and bi-lateral institutions active in the Basin.”1 • Graduate degree in environmental policy, natural resource management, international development or related field required. At least 10 years of field experience working on conservation and sustainable development in the Amazon Basin preferred. Position initially based in Washington, with potential relocation to Brasilia. English, Spanish and Portuguese language skills required.

International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources • International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)—World Conservation Union • Makes “redlist” of endangered species and spreads this knowledge • Provides support for drafting environmental laws and plans for natural resource management • Enacts plans for environmental conservation • Job Opportunity • Regional Sustainable Livelihoods Advisor for Mekong Wetlands • 5 years experience • Ability to travel to field locations

Possible Jobs to Land • Environmental Scientist or Conservational Scientist • College Board Website says job growth for Environmental Scientists will be higher than average, but for Conservational Scientists it will be lower than average. • Although both seem to be the same thing, the rationale is that more production companies will be looking for people to help them follow government environmental regulations. So, it depends on what you want to do. • About $52,000-$54,000 dollars average yearly salary for these jobs.

Graduate Research Position • Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)—University of Colorado at Boulder • Graduate Research Assistant Postion at CIRES and the National Geophysical Data Center • Develop and implement algorithms for automated processing and analysis of satellite magnetic data and produce innovative real-time space weather products describing and forecasting the state of the Earth’s magnetic field and ionosphere. • Strong understanding of physics, math, and computer programming. • Salary—$1450-$1680 per month plus tuition.

  12. Professional Position • CIRES/Aerospace Engineering Optics and Lidar Systems Research Associate • Assist or lead in the design of a laser radar system, assist and train graduate students. • Qualifications: PhD level in optical or electrical engineering, physics, or a related field. • Optical engineering experience in optical design, layout and construction of optical systems. • General areas of expertise should include some of the following topics: optical design, polarization, interferometry, lasers, holography, and spectroscopy. • Computer Programming
