  2. Application to be Used • Microsoft Publisher • A desktop publisher allows for exact placement of graphics and text on page • Available in the professional version of Office XP

  3. Grade Level • Students of all grades can produce this type of storybooks, but it should not limit creation to our students • Parents, teachers, administrators, staff can also create stories

  4. Skill Level – a continuum • Any user will be able to create and take home with them a final product of their storybook Less help More help Students with Basic Computer Knowledge and Computer Application Skills Students without Basic Computer Knowledge and Computer Application Skills

  5. Time Frame • 2 weeks, includes • Introduction to MS Publisher • Utilizing a Unicode Keyboard, specific to your language • Storyboard • Creation of story (text) • Creation of graphics (original artwork digitize) • Creating in MS Publisher • Publish final product • Presentation

  6. Introduction to MS Publisher • Learn the very basic components • Insert text boxes • Insert graphics • Formatting • Schemes • Editing • Page Setup – important!

  7. Utilizing a Unicode Keyboard • “Current computer software permits people to write, publish, send e-mails…in virtually every language on the planet. There are no longer the limitations which prevented speakers from typing or reading their language in their own orthography – regardless of how many accented letters exist.” • With the help from Chris Harvey (www.languagegeek.com and consultant to the Indigenous Language Institute), we no longer need to remember keystroke combinations to create our unique letters of our languages. We can just type!

  8. Storyboard • Create a storyboard - layout of text and graphics and order • Creation of texts • Creation of graphics • Original artwork, pictures will be digitized (scan) • Use a digital camera to capture still images • Edit graphics (color, size, etc.)

  9. Creating in MS Publisher • Type text • Insert graphics (digitized) • Edit • Proofread • Edit, again • Collaboration with peers (comments, suggestions) • Edit, last time

  10. Publication • Decide… • if your storybook will be in B&W, Color, or both • what type of paper you will use (cardstock for cover, plain paper for inside) • how you will bind your storybook

  11. Storytelling Presentation • Present one of your storybooks created to the class • To think about…(instructors) • Cost effective ways in which you can duplicate many storybooks for your classroom • Making the storybook available on-line • Incorporate sound recordings of students
