  3. EVERYTHING AROUND US AIR Explain the meaning of the word “ENVIRONMENT” • SOIL • NATURAL ELEMENTS • WATER • PLANTS • MAN MADE COMPONENTS • ANIMALS • HOUSES • INDOORS AND OUTDOORS • FACTORIES • OFFICE BUILDINGS

  4. FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU RELEASE PESTICIDES INTO THE ENVIRONMENT • SENSITIVE AREAS IN THE ENVIRONMENT *AT THE USE SITE *NEAR THE USE SITE • CONDITIONS IN THE ENVIRONMENT THAT COULD CAUSE PESTICIDE TO MOVE OFFSITE • CHANGES IN METHODS OR USAGE TO REDUCE THE RISKS OF CONTAMINATION

  5. POINT SOURCE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION CAN BE TRACED BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL SITE. NON-POINT SOURCE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION COMES FROM A WIDER AREA. POINT SOURCE vs. NON-POINT SOURCE

  6. SENSITIVE AREAS • IN OR NEAR SURFACE WATER • SCHOOLS,PLAYGROUNDS,HOSPITAL • HABITATS OF ENDANGERED SPECIES • APIARIES,WILDLIFE REFUGE,PARKS • ORNAMENTAL GARDENS • WHERE FOOD OR FEED IS

  7. PESTICIDES MOVE OFF THE RELEASE SITE IN SEVERAL WAYS • AIR, ie. WIND OR VENTILATION SYSTEMS. • WATER, ie. RUNOFF AND LEACHING • ON OR IN OBJECTS, ie. PLANTS, ANIMALS AND HUMANS MOVED OFFSITE

  8. DRIFT Pesticide particles, dust, spray droplets, and vapors that are carried offsite in the air.

  9. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE AIR MOVEMENT OF PESTICIDES • Lightweight particles • Fine nozzles • High pressure • High wind speeds

  10. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE WATER MOVEMENT OF PESTICIDES • Drift, leaching, and runoff • Spills, leaks, and back-siphoning • Improper disposal of rinsates and containers • Too much rainwater or irrigation

  11. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE MOVEMENT OF PESTICIDES ON OR IN OTHER OBJECTS • SHOES AND CLOTHING • FOOD AND FEED • PRODUCTS THAT EXCEED LEGAL TOLERANCES

  12. HOW PESTICIDES COULD HARM NONTARGET PLANTS AND ANIMALS • Direct contact of pesticide on the non-target plant or animal. • Poor timing • Residue

  13. References • A Guide for Private and Commercial Applicators. • Applying Pesticides Correctly BULLETIN #825 The Ohio State UniversityExtension
