Each Fact Sheet – Includesthe Commodity Code • Example – the Commodity Beef Patties that we order have a commodity code of A626. • A626 –Beef, Patties, Ground, Raw, Frozen, IQF, 40 LB is the way it is listed on the fact sheet. • If the Disposition Number showing on your FDP Form 11 & 12 is A626-101-J-004 then you know that the fact sheet is for the same item you are getting from the USDA.
Commodity Purchase and Distribution Responsibilities • FNS/FDD is responsible for allocating entitlement funds to States, managing orders, and working directly with Regional Offices, States, and Indian Tribal Organizations • Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) are responsible for purchasing commodities, inspection/grading, where required, and managing logistics • Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) provides national food safety inspection, shares this responsibility with FDA, and is our point of contact on commodity hold and recall issues

Food and Nutrition ServiceFood Distribution Programs FNS/FDD administers USDA's commodity programs • Coordinates distribution of approximately 1.9 billion pounds of food valued at approximately $1.6 billion • Serves about 98,000 public and non-profit private schools as well as organizations feeding low income populations

Child Nutrition Programs(NSLP, CACFP, SFSP) • Commodities comprise about 15-20% of the food used in schools • Over 145 commodity foods are offered to schools • Many are purchased in ready-to-use form, but some are purchased in bulk for further processing
FDD Processing Responsibilities • Approves National Processing Agreement • Approves EPDS’s and summary EPDS • Establishes, holds and monitors bond • Monitors National Monthly Performance Reports • Approves sales verification process, if applicable.
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) • Donations of healthful USDA commodities for low income and needy • States determine income thresholds and distribution frequency • Distributed primarily through food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens • Alabama’s TEFAP Entitlement for FY 2008 is $2,179,473
FDD PROMOTES FRUIT & VEGETABLE CONSUMPTION Since SY/FY 2003 $50 million entitlement funds have been allocated for procurement of fresh fruits and vegetables for schools through DoD 46 states, DC, VI, PR and Guam plan to participate next school year AMS also purchases fresh, canned, and frozen fruits and vegetables for the commodity programs

Alabama’s Entitlement SY 2007-08 • Total reimbursable meals for previous SYwas 93,380,480 • Actual Per Meal Assistance Level (PAL) is $.1875Plus an additional $.02085 to meet the 12% requirement • This number of meals times this combined Assistance Level of $.2084 • Equals the Commodity Entitlement for the year which is $20,198,809 • We set aside $956,676 of this amount for DOD FreshFruits and Vegetables which is Alabama’s share of the 50 million dollars allocated nationwide.

Reminders • Don’t let your commodities pile up. • Order your DOD produce before it arrives at your Distributor. • As of 4/19/2002, you no longer have to complete a Donated Food Loss Report form when a commodity goes bad, treat it as you would a purchased food loss – Condemnation Notices are no longer required either. • When you have a consistent problem with a commodity – send me a “complete” complaint form.
Reminders (con’t) • If you return a commodity item to your distributor, you will not get a replacement.(Try to salvage what you can - if worth more than your delivery fee - keep it.) • Shortage From the Warehouse Forms are not supposed to be sent until after you and your distributor have agreed that the product is not available for you – send the distributor and me a copy. • If your distributor ships you a commodity that does not belong to you, do not eat it – it belongs to another recipient agency.
