  2. Objectives • To understand the schooling during 1900-1949. • Have a deeper understanding of what children went through during the 1900’s • Understand why children didn’t always go to school till the age of 16 • Understand the major events that impacted education

What were schools for? • Early 1900’s • Wealthy children went to private academies and poorer boys and girls went to public schools • Boys and girls were separated in private schools • Besides teaching subjects like reading, spelling, and history • Girls sometimes learned manners and dancing, French, drawing and how to walk and act like a young lady. What was worth learning? • Private Academies • Subjects the girls learned; • Reading, spelling, history, arithmetic, geography and penmanship or handwriting • Public Schools • Were FREE • Most of the subjects were the same, but teachers were harder on the children in public schools Oracle ThinkQuest Educational Foundation, (2000)

Who were the learners? • In 1904, children were supposed to go to school until the age of 16 • Most kids never finished the 8th grade • Some went to high school and few went to college • Very few women went to college • Even the rich girls didn’t all get to go to college • Class sizes ranged from school to school Encyclopedia.com. What was the role of the teacher? • Teachers were strict and the classrooms were more orderly. • Great Depression: • Teachers taught the children how to care for their books, clothes and other belongings. • In 1944 children were living during a rough time • World War 2 was going on • Teachers taught the children about the war • How to be patriotic Oracle ThinkQuest Educational Foundation, (2000)

Parker • Pleads for the centrality of art in education • Mary McLeod Bethune • African American educator • She funded the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls in Daytona Beach, Florida • Ella Flagg Young • 1st female superintendent of a large city school system Sass, Edmund.   8. Key Dates • 1905: IQ tests developed • 1914-1918: World War 1 • 1929: Great Depression • 1931: The Star-Spangled Banner is adapted as the national anthem • 1939-1945: World War 2 FactMonster. (2007)

How does this relate to education today? • Teachers have to follow guidelines • Teachers use to be able to teach the way the way they wanted. • Some ideas are restricted as others have to be taught • Major technology has come into education today Oracle ThinkQuest Educational Foundation, (2000)

  10. Summary Children either went to private academies or public schools based on income. Most children did not make it to the 8th grade because they needed to help out on their family farm. Private academies and public schools taught the same subjects. Teachers were more strict in public schools than private academies. Many events happened during 1900 and 1949 that changed how schools ran and operated
