  2. The Igneris • - These settlers came from the coast of Venezuela. • - These new inhabitants of our island are known as the Saladoid people.

  3. The Igneris • - The Igneris established themselves in the coast. • Near the mangrove swamps and the mouths of rivers. • - This location provided them with abundant food resources.

  4. The Igneris: • -The Igneris lived in family clans. • -These where large groups of families where everyone took part in the daily duties. • Clans lived in different settlements where a cacique ruled.

  5. Agriculture: • - The Igneris where the first inhabitants of our island that farmed the land. • -They practiced agriculture. • - Their main crop was yucca, which they made cassava bread.

  6. Agriculture • - The Igneris farming system is called, the slash and burn. • - The only disadvantage of this system was that it required long periods of waiting.

  7. Their favorite dishes: • - The favorite food of the Igneris was the crab. • - The Igneris had more types of food in their daily diet than the Archaic people. • seeds, and fruits. • reptiles • Birds • Snails, fish, and crabs • Turtles • Hutia • Cassava bread

  8. Lifestyle • -The Igneri clans lived in villages made up of huts. • -These huts were homes built of wood and straw, where various families lived. • - clans worked together in various tasks.

  9. Lifestyle • - Some of the daily jobs among the Igneris: • Farming • Preparing food • Hunting • Fishing • Making pottery • Creating tools

  10. Excellent pottery • Best potters of the Caribbean. • They had great skills in molding the clay, and decorating their pieces. • They created atractive designs, and used striking colors, like red and white.

  11. Pottery • Domestic pottery: pottery used mostly at home, as tools, as containers that people used every day. • These pieces of pottery where simple, and had little decoration

  12. Pottery • - Many pieces of pottery where found in Guaynabo and Vieques. • They where in shape of cups, jars, and bells. • Igneri pottery is different from other Indigenous groups bacause of the excellent way they dried or baked the clay.

  13. Pottery • - The Igneris used very hot temperatures that came from a fire and heated stones.

  14. Igneri tools • mortar and pestle: a strong deep bowl, made of wood, stone, or metal. In a mortar, substances are pounded or crushed with a pestle.

  15. Igneri tools • Anvil: a heavy block on which metal or tools are shaped ( using a hammer)
