  2. BACKGROUND *Born in The Wallowa Valley *His father died when he was in his teens *He only saw his mom when he was born *The Nez Perce War happened

  3. 1871 *His dad died and then he became chief * His dad died in the Wallowa War

  4. 1877 • The Nez Perce Wars happened. • There were two wars. • The first one his dad fought in and died. • The second one he fought in.

  5. 1878 • Joseph’s long journey • Joseph moved to Idaho with his band(tribe) because the government forced his tribe to move.

  6. jsajska 1871 *His tribe, the Nez Perce moved to Oklahoma. *He moved to Oklahoma in June because the government forced his tribe to move again.

  7. 1879 • He gave a speech in Washington D.C. • His speech was that he wanted peace between his tribe and the U.S. government. • It really improved how the government treated the Nez Perce tribe.

  8. Character Traits • He was caring because he protected his tribe instead of worrying about himself. • He was brave because he fought for his tribe with no one looking after him.

  9. Quote “For myself, I don’t care. It’s for them I will surrender.” It means that he wanted to protect his tribe from death no matter what.
