  1. New River Gorge National RiverGreenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Inventory Savanna LyonsCitizens Conservation Corps of West Virginia

  2. Overview • GHG Accounting Primer • GHG Inventory Results • Next Steps

  3. GHG Accounting Primer • It’s as easy as A x B = C • Activity Data x GHG Emission Factor = GHG Emissions • Collect Data • Select Methods and Emission Factors • The Climate Leadership in Parks (CLIP) Tool • Microsoft Excel-based application that parks use to manage carbon

  4. GHG Accounting Primer • Greenhouse Gases • Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), and High Global Warming Potential (GWP) Gases (HFCs, PFCs, SF6) • Emission Sources • Stationary Fossil Fuel Combustion (Energy) • Purchased Electricity (Energy) • Mobile Fossil Fuel Combustion (Transportation) • Landfilled Solid Waste (Waste) • Wastewater Treatment (Waste) • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Other) • Fertilizer Application (Other) • Entities • Park Operations, Visitors, Concessioners, etc.

  5. Data Collection • Collaboration between many park staff across all divisions • Looked at electric and natural gas bills and wastewater treatment • Reviewed all cooling units and stationary combustion systems (propane and natural gas heaters) on an individual basis • Reviewed Greening of the Interior reports on waste diversion rates and green purchasing practices • Inventoried G-tag (leased) and I-tag (purchased) fleet and fuel economy based on monthly mileage reports • Incorporated information on forest composition, landscape management

  6. Park Operations GHG Inventory Results • Total Park Operations GHG Emissions = 1,633 MTCO2E* *Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent

  7. Park Operations GHG Inventory

  8. Data Gaps and Assumptions • Data Gaps • Contribution of visitors and visitor travel (including boater shuttling) to emissions – a next step • Better data on waste and recycling so that we can set realistic goals

  9. Next Steps • Prepare Climate Action Plan • Implement Actions • Update Inventory • Monitor Progress • Educate
